The myth
In the imperial palaces no one inhabits any longer, among rotted screens and sunken mats, a lady remains. She was a nyōbō, a low-ranking attendant of a court that died out centuries ago, and no one has told her it is over. Still she powders her face white, still she lacquers her teeth black, still she paints her eyebrows high on her forehead as an etiquette that governs nobody now demanded. And she waits. She waits for the man who came by night and never came again, with the exact look of one who has just heard footsteps in the corridor.
