The myth
Hangaku belongs not to the epic but to the archive: it was the Kamakura shogunate itself that set her name down in the Azuma Kagami, and that is her glory. A daughter of the dispossessed Jō clan of Echigo, in 1201 she shut herself with her nephew inside the fort of Torisakayama and held the palisade with her bow, dropping attacker after attacker as the siege tightened, until an arrow drove through her thigh and she fell unable to stand. They carried her captive before the shogun Yoriie, and there the unexpected happened: an enemy warrior, Asari Yoshitō, asked for her hand before the court that had just defeated her, and was granted it. She rode to Kai and the chronicle fell silent. No legend adorns her — she has something rarer: the written testimony of the men who beat her.
