The myth
The monks of Mount Kurama raised him and, so the story goes, the tengu taught him to fight: that is why his swordsmanship belonged to no school, it belonged to the wind. At Ichi-no-tani he rode down a ravine no horse should have ridden down; at Dan-no-ura, cornered, he leapt from ship to ship — eight of them, they say — until no spear could reach him. He won every battle his brother fought, and his brother hunted him to the far north for winning them too well. He died at thirty, surrounded at Hiraizumi. Japan has spent eight centuries refusing to believe it.
