The myth
On the mountain roads of Tosa, after dark, no beast lies in wait — only a beautiful young woman who stops to talk with you. There is no claw, no roar, no warning: just a kind voice in the darkness and a road you no longer walk alone. At dawn they find you laid out whole, skin unbroken, without a single wound, and when they lift you the body folds like an empty sack, for not a scrap of flesh remains inside. The nikusui was never defeated nor driven out, because no one ever learned what she was or where she came from. She is still on the mountain, waiting for someone to walk alone again.
