The myth
You never had to travel far: you only had to walk home at night by the wrong road. Then came the woman asking for company, or the monk urging you to give up your traps, or your own wife waiting at the gate when your wife was already inside. The traveller woke at dawn in a paddy field, barefoot, purse empty, dry leaves where the coins had been, and knew without being told that a fox had laughed at him. And when mockery was not enough, the fox went in — slipping beneath the fingernails — and whoever carried it stopped eating what men eat, spoke in a voice not his own, and fled from dogs. Priests drove it out by calling on the lord fox against the masterless one, for only a fox has authority over a fox. It was never fully killed. Even now, when rain falls under a bright sun, Japan says a fox is being married — and no one goes out to look.
