The myth
They called him the great fool of Owari, and he hurled incense at his own father's altar so that no one would forget how little he cared for form. At twenty-six he struck through a storm at an army ten times his size and came back with Imagawa Yoshimoto's head; from then on he sealed his orders with two words: cover the realm in force. He tore down the shogunate that had spent two centuries pretending to govern, burned the holy mountain of Hiei with its monks inside, broke the Takeda horsemen behind palisades bristling with matchlocks, and raised beside Lake Biwa a gilded seven-storey tower so the whole province could see who ruled. He signed his letters Demon King of the Sixth Heaven, and he was not joking. With half the islands still unconquered, one of his own generals ringed the temple where he slept unguarded: Nobunaga took his own life amid the flames, and no trace of his body was ever found.
