The myth
Born of a serpent, or forged from the smoke of letters he refused to read — the sources will not agree — Shuten-dōji rose as king of the oni on the mountain that watched the road into the capital, and dragged the daughters of the court to his table. No blade could touch him; only deceit. Dressed as pilgrims, Raikō and his four warriors poured him the sake that gods brew to poison demons, and struck off his head as he slept. The head flew and bit the hero's helmet before it died, and grew so heavy it could not cross the pass at Oi-no-saka: there it lies buried, guarding the threshold of Kyoto still.
