The myth

Ajax son of Telamon, lord of Salamis and cousin to Achilles, was called by Homer the bulwark of the Achaeans and the best of the Greeks after the son of Thetis. Behind his shield of seven oxhides he held back the Trojan surge upon the ships, stood against Hector in single combat until night parted them, recovered the body of Patroclus and carried Achilles' corpse from the field on his own shoulders — and through all of it no god ever came down to aid him: his greatness was entirely his own. Yet when the dead hero's armour was granted to Odysseus's eloquence rather than to his arm, Athena clouded his mind and sent him to butcher cattle believing he was slaughtering kings. Coming to his senses, he fixed in the earth the sword Hector had given him and let himself fall upon it. And when Odysseus sought him among the dead, his shade refused him a single word and walked away in silence.
