The myth
Björn Járnsíða, «Ironside», son of Ragnarr loðbrók and Áslaug the Völsung, carried his line's prows further than any of his kin. While his brothers broke the kingdoms of England, he passed the Strait of Gibraltar with a fleet and spent three years burning the coasts of Africa, the Balearics, Provence and northern Italy, believing — so the legend runs — that he was sacking Rome itself. The sea charged him for that daring: the ships of Córdoba lay waiting on his return, and barely a third of his fleet came home. With what remained he founded a dynasty of kings at Uppsala, and no source has ever managed to say where he got the name that made him invulnerable in the memory of men.
