The myth
His father was a prince turned into a bear by a stepmother, and his mother watched him be hunted down. Of the three sons born of that, Böðvarr, the Little Bear, was the only one born whole, and he ended up at Lejre, at the court of King Hrólfr Kraki, as the first of his champions. In the last battle, while his body sat motionless in the hall, a huge bear fought in front of the king and no weapon could touch it. His companion Hjalti went to wake him, thinking he had lost his nerve. Böðvarr stood up, the bear vanished from the field, and he went down to fight with his sword beside Hrólfr until both of them fell.
