The myth

His name meant "trick," and he carried that word on him all his short life like a verdict. He was ugly and he was rich, a herald's son, the only boy among five sisters, and he had the fastest feet in Troy. When on the night of defeat Hector asked for a man to crawl down to the Achaean ships, he alone stepped forward — but he would take no mortal's wage: he demanded the immortal horses of Achilles, and an oath sworn on the sceptre. He threw a grey wolf's hide across his back, pulled a marten-skin cap over his head, took up his curved bow and went out onto the plain on all fours. Two shadows lay still among the dead and let him pass, then cut off his road. He wept, he offered gold, and he told them everything he knew: where the Thracians slept, where the white horses of Rhesus were tethered. Then he begged for his life. Diomedes' sword went through his neck while he was still speaking, and his head rolled in the dust with the sentence half-finished. They hung his wolf-skin in a tamarisk as an offering to Athena. Of the house of Eumedes, no son remained.
