The myth
From Ekhidna's brood, between the hound Orthos and the Chimaera, came a beast the Thebans called simply the Strangler. She settled on a rock at the city gates and for years carried off its young men through the air, one after another, and neither sword nor wall availed. Only later did they tell that she asked before she killed. When a limping stranger gave back the answer no one had found, there was no battle: the Sphinx threw herself from her own rock, for a solved riddle killed her better than any spear.
