The myth
Bastard daughter of the man exiled to the world's edge, who founded a kingdom of ice there, Freydís crossed the western sea when no other people in Europe had dared so far. One tradition remembers her on the shore of Vínland, heavy with child and abandoned by men in flight: she stood her ground alone, prised a sword from a dead man's fingers, bared her breast and struck the blade against her own flesh with a shout — and a whole people fell back before her to their boats. Another remembers her at a bloody dawn, lying to her husband so he would cut down her partners, and taking up the axe herself when no man would kill the five women left standing. No one knows which of the two women existed, or whether they were one. She sailed home to Greenland with a full hold, and her brother Leif, knowing what he knew, would not raise a hand against her — he only said her line would never prosper. No sword ever killed her. She was killed by two stories that cannot be reconciled.
