The myth
She came out of the stone, as all her kind do, and her name was counted among the troll-women long before anyone dared set down her face. She keeps to the mountain, and comes down when the light withdraws from the world and the nights grow longer than the days: horns on her brow, hooves breaking the snow, fifteen tails dragging behind her and a sack on her back that is never full. She buried two husbands before she settled for the third, and bore the thirteen who come down after her, one to each night. She wants no gold, no vengeance, no land. She wants the children who disobey, and the cauldron is already steaming. They said she starved once the children turned obedient; it was a lie. Grýla's hunger is the hunger of winter, and winter always comes back.
