The myth
Helgi Hundingsbani, son of Sigmundr the Völsung and half-brother to Sigurðr, was born beneath the croaking of ravens while the Norns strung over his cradle the threads of a fate no hand could ever loosen. At fifteen he slew King Hunding and all his sons, winning the name he would carry to the grave, and afterwards sailed to Frekasteinn to tear the valkyrie Sigrún from the husband forced upon her. He won — but in winning he destroyed her kin, and spared the one brother he should have killed: Dagr, armed with Óðinn's own spear, ran him through in the grove of fetters. Even dead he rode back one night from Valhöll, caked in frost and blood, so that Sigrún might sleep in his arms inside the burial mound before dawn called him away.
