The myth
She and her sister Þorgerðr were the goddesses of Jarl Hákon of Hlaðir, and in his temple they had a house of their own, gold on their arms and real clothes. At Hjörungavágr, with the battle lost against the Jomsvikings, the jarl went off to a clearing, knelt facing north and offered the one thing he had not yet given them: his seven-year-old son. That afternoon a hailstorm rose from the north and struck the enemy full in the face, and within the hail, say those who were there, flew arrows loosed from the fingers of two women. The Jomsvikings lost. The jarl never said what it had cost him.
