The myth
She was the fairest of Priam's daughters, and the god of light desired her. He gave her the eyes of the future in exchange for a night, and once the gift was in her hands she refused him. Apollo could not take back what he had granted; he did something worse — he left the sight untouched and stripped her words of belief. From then on she watched Troy burn every time she looked at her brother Paris, every time she looked at Helen, and at last when the wooden horse rolled through the gates and she tried to split it with an axe while they disarmed her, laughing, taking her for mad. The city fell exactly as she had said. They tore her from Athena's altar with the Palladium still in her arms, dealt her out as plunder, and she crossed the sea to Mycenae already knowing the name of the woman waiting with the blade. She stopped on the threshold, smelled the old blood of the house of Atreus, spoke aloud what was about to happen, and walked in anyway. She was never once wrong. She was never once believed.
