The myth
He was never meant to reign: the third son, come to the throne only because those ahead of him died far from home. But Heracles ran in his blood, and Delphi had named the price — either Sparta burns, or a king of the lion's line falls. With three hundred chosen men, every one of them a father, so that no house would end, he sealed a corridor of stone between the mountain and the sea, and for two days the largest empire on earth broke against a wall of bronze no wider than a furlong. One betrayed goat-path achieved what a hundred thousand spears could not. He dismissed the allies, kept his own, and combed his long hair before the end. Men fought over his corpse as they had over Troy's heroes, and the Great King, unable to defeat him dead, had him nailed to a stake. Forty years later Sparta brought his bones home. The city he saved raised him no legend — only a list of names and an order obeyed.
