The myth
She was born where the world ends, daughter of the old powers of the sea, at the edge where night keeps its flocks. Poseidon took her among the flowers of a meadow, and she carried in her womb, unknowing, a winged horse and a giant with a golden sword. Then came the son of Danaë, shod with wind, invisible beneath the helm of the Lord of the Dead, and he did not dare to look: he turned his face away and reaped her neck with a curved blade as she slept. Her children leapt from the cut into the air. But the head kept its eyes open — it petrified a king, petrified an army, and ended fixed upon the breast of a goddess. Even now, on shields and thresholds, that face stands watch. They killed her, and she went on fulfilling her name: the guardian.
