The myth

Daughter of a river and a Muse, she had a maiden's face and the body of a bird, and a voice for which men let go of the oar and walked toward a meadow strewn with white bones. She promised no pleasure: she promised knowledge. She claimed to know all that had happened beneath the sky of Troy and all that passed upon the earth, and no sailor born of woman had ever sailed past her. One condition hung over her: the day a man heard the song and held his course, she would die. Then came Odysseus lashed to the mast, his rowers' ears sealed with wax, and the ship did not turn. Parthenope let herself fall into the water, and the sea carried her, featherless and voiceless, to a beach on the gulf of Campania. There she came aground. The Greeks who found her raised her a tomb, an oracle bade them honour her each year with races of torches, and houses grew over her bones. That city bore her name for centuries. Even now, when someone says "Parthenopean," they are naming a dead siren.
