The myth
He was born from a cut. When Medusa's head came away, a horse leapt from the open neck already knowing how to fly, sired by the god who made both horses and storms. With him beneath the saddle Bellerophon burned the Chimera out of the sky and took it for proof that he was a god; he spurred for Olympus, and the horse shook him loose halfway. The rider fell and walked blind for the rest of his days. Pegasus kept climbing. He lives in the house of Zeus now, and it is he who carries the thunder and the lightning up to him whenever the sky has to break.
