The myth
Penthesilea, daughter of Ares and queen of the Amazons, came to Troy with her own sister's blood on her hands, seeking in battle not glory but purification and death. After Hector's fall she charged at the head of twelve warriors and wrought such havoc among the Achaeans that Achilles himself had to come and stop her. She fell beneath his spear, and in the instant he tore away her helmet to strip the body, he was struck with love for the woman he had just killed. Thersites mocked him and gouged the corpse's eyes; Achilles felled him dead with a single blow. So the woman who had come to Troy seeking her own end fulfilled at last the name given her at birth: grief to the host.
