The myth
Born of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa, Polyphemus herded his flocks on the heights of a land without laws or ploughs, a solitary giant with a single eye open above his brow. When Odysseus came to his cave asking for guest-right, the Cyclops answered by devouring his men, and the sacred law of hospitality broke in blood. Cunning defeated strength: unmixed wine, the name "Nobody," and a burning olive stake tore the light from him forever. Blind and howling among his rams, he hurled mountains into the sea and begged his father for a vengeance that needed no hands — that the man who blinded him wander ten more years and come home alone, late, to a house already taken. Poseidon heard him, and the sea closed over Odysseus like a sentence.
