The myth
Ragnarr loðbrók, «Shaggy-Breeches», is the sea-king the sagas raised to the stature of myth. He won both his name and his first wife by slaying a monstrous serpent in breeches boiled in pitch, later wedding Áslaug, daughter of the dragon-slayer Sigurðr, and fathering the line of warlords that would ravage England. Aged and consumed by envy of his own sons' fame, he sailed for Northumbria with two ships alone and was cast into a snake pit by King Ælla, where he sang his whole life through before he died. His true vengeance was not his own but his sons': a heathen army that crossed the North Sea and broke three kingdoms to collect it.
