The myth
Her name means "rune of victory", and Helgi first saw her riding the air with her mail flecked with blood and light streaming from the points of the spears. When her father promised her to a man she did not want, she did not wait to be rescued: she went herself to find the warrior and asked him for war. At Frekasteinn she won her freedom at the price of her house — her father and brother died there — and the brother who lived killed Helgi with the spear Óðinn himself had lent him. Sigrún cursed him down to his last ship and his last horse. Then, when the dead man returned for a single night to his burial mound with frost thick in his hair, she went into the grave, made him a bed and slept in his arms until he rode away before dawn. The next night she waited in vain, and died of grief. They say the two were born again, under other names, to find each other once more.
