The myth
There are three of them at the foot of the ash, watering its roots with water from the well: Urðr, what was; Verðandi, what is becoming; and Skuld, what is to be. The third is the only one who tells you nothing: she carves the rune and says nothing. The skalds counted her among the valkyries too, choosing on the field who falls, because the future and death are the same trade seen from two different places. It was never the first two that frightened heroes.
