The myth
Talos, the bronze giant, was forged by Hephaestus — or left as the last survivor of the bronze race — and given to Crete to guard its shores. Three times each day he circled the whole island, hurling boulders at approaching ships, and any man who reached the sand he killed by heating himself white-hot and crushing him to his chest with a grimace that looked like a smile. No weapon could bite his metal, for he had no flesh to wound: only a single vein sealed by a bronze nail at the ankle. When the Argo came to his beaches, it was neither hero nor spear that felled him, but the stare of the sorceress Medea, who drove him mad until he grazed that ankle against a rock. The nail sprang loose, the ichor poured out like molten lead, and the eternal guardian of Crete came crashing into the sea.
