The myth
Daughter of Þórr and of golden-haired Sif, and her name means strength. While her father was away, someone promised her to Alvíss, a dwarf who came up from under the earth to claim her. Þórr did not raise the hammer: he sat the dwarf down and kept asking him questions all night long, one after another, until the sun came up and the dwarf, who could not bear the light, turned to stone halfway through an answer. Nobody asked her. The poems later count her among the valkyries who serve the fallen in Valhöll, and in her case it makes sense: the one who was never allowed to choose ended up choosing the dead.
