The myth
Þrymr, the Din, lord of the þursar, carried out the boldest theft the Eddas record: he seized Þórr's hammer Mjöllnir and buried it eight leagues beneath the earth, knowing that without it Ásgarðr lay defenceless. Seated on his burial mound, plaiting gold collars for his hounds, he named his price: the goddess Freyja as his bride. Yet it was his own ceremonial pride that doomed him, for at the height of the wedding feast he called for the hammer to hallow a veiled bride who was not Freyja at all, but the thunder god in disguise. The fist closed on the haft, and the lord of giants died at his own wedding without ever raising a weapon.
