The myth
Víðarr, son of Óðinn and the giantess Gríðr, is the god who does not speak. Almost nothing is told of him, except that he wears a thick shoe made from every scrap of leather men throw away when they cut their own, and that this is why the scraps should be thrown away. When Ragnarök comes and Fenrir swallows his father, Víðarr will set that foot on the wolf's lower jaw, seize the upper one with his hands and tear it in two. And he will be one of the few still alive when the world rises again out of the sea.
