The myth
Völundr, prince of the elves and the greatest smith the Germanic tongues remember, lived alone in the wolf-valleys forging seven hundred gold rings for the valkyrie who had left him. King Níðuðr took him in his sleep and, on his queen's counsel, had the sinews behind his knees cut, to keep him crippled on an island forging treasures for the crown. It was the worst mistake of his reign. Völundr beheaded the king's two sons, set their skulls in silver as banquet cups and served them to their father, made gems of their eyes for the queen and a brooch of their teeth for the princess, and all of them praised the craftsmanship without knowing what they held. Then he left the daughter with child and rose into the air, laughing, above a king who could never reach him again.
